Pocket Shear Vane Device Manufacturer,Supplier and Exporter in India
Product Code : TVT-STE-10567
The Pocket Shear Vane Device is a compact, hand-held instrument for the rapid determination of the shear strength of cohesive soils, either in the field or in the laboratory, without the need for sample trimming.
How It Works
The vane blades are pressed into a reasonably flat soil surface (a 25 mm diameter area is sufficient) and rotated by hand; the torque required to shear the soil is read directly from the calibrated dial. Because the vane can be rotated in different orientations, the device permits a large number of strength values to be obtained with different orientations of the failure plane, giving a quick picture of strength variability without laboratory sample preparation.
Technical Specifications
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Sample Requirement | Flat surface, 25 mm diameter (no trimming required) |
| Dimension | 345 (L) x 275 (W) x 80 (H) mm |
| Approx. Weight | 1 kg |
Applications
The Pocket Shear Vane Device is used for rapid, low-disturbance shear strength assessment of cohesive soils in the field or laboratory, applying the same vane shear principle as ASTM D4648: Standard Test Method for Laboratory Miniature Vane Shear Test for Saturated Fine-Grained Clayey Soil and IS 2720 (Part 30). It is commonly used for quick strength screening of trial pits, exposed cut faces and undisturbed samples ahead of more detailed laboratory testing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the pocket shear vane require sample trimming?
No, sample trimming is eliminated; the vane is pressed directly onto a reasonably flat soil surface of about 25 mm diameter.
Why does the device allow multiple readings per sample?
Because the vane can be oriented in different directions, it permits a large number of strength values to be obtained across different orientations of the failure plane.
How does it compare to the Laboratory Vane Apparatus?
The pocket shear vane is a portable, hand-operated device for rapid field or bench checks, while the Laboratory Vane Apparatus is used for more controlled laboratory shear strength determination per ASTM D4648 / IS 2720 (Part 30).
