Electrical Density Gauge

Product Code : TVT-STE-10582

The Electrical Density Gauge (EDG) is a portable, battery-powered instrument that provides a nuclear-free alternative for determining the moisture content and density of compacted soils used in road beds and foundations.

How It Works

The gauge's internal, built-in soil sensor probe is used at the compacted surface to measure electrical response signals to a test range depth of 30 cm, from which density and moisture content are derived using the instrument's internal calibration curves. A user-friendly, step-by-step menu on the touch-screen control unit guides the operator through each stage of the test and flags readings that fall outside the established curves for the material being tested, with results transferable via USB or optional Bluetooth, and optional GPS tagging to about 3 m accuracy. Because it uses no radioactive source, the EDG can be used anywhere without the licensing, transport and safety regulations associated with nuclear density gauges.

Applications

The Electrical Density Gauge is used for non-nuclear in-situ density and moisture measurement of compacted soils, following the principles set out in ASTM D7830/D7830M: Standard Guide for Conducting Soil Density and Water Content Measurements Using an Electrical Density Gauge. It offers project teams a licence-free alternative where the radiation-source handling, transport and disposal requirements of nuclear gauges (governed by ASTM D6938 for the nuclear method) are impractical or undesirable on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose an electrical density gauge over a nuclear gauge?
It avoids the licensing, transport, storage and disposal regulations that apply to radioactive sources in nuclear density gauges, while still giving a rapid in-situ density and moisture reading.

How deep does the EDG measure?
It measures to a test range depth of 30 cm using its internal, built-in soil sensor probe.

How accurate are EDG readings?
The manufacturer states dry density accuracy within 3% and moisture content accuracy within 2% of standard reference tests; site-specific correlation against reference methods is recommended for critical applications.
