Methylene Blue Value Set

Product Code : TVT-STE-10602

The Methylene Blue Value Set is used to determine the clay and harmful fine material content in the fine portion of aggregate, a key indicator of aggregate cleanliness for concrete and pavement applications.

How It Works

A suspension is prepared from the fine aggregate or filler fraction to be tested, and methylene blue dye solution is added incrementally; clay minerals and certain organic matter adsorb the dye onto their surfaces. The endpoint, detected by a characteristic pale blue halo persisting around a drop of the suspension on filter paper, indicates the amount of dye adsorbed, from which the methylene blue value (MBV) — a direct measure of harmful fines content — is calculated.

Applications

The methylene blue test is used to assess the cleanliness of fine aggregate and mineral filler, governed by EN 933-9: Tests for Geometrical Properties of Aggregates – Assessment of Fines – Methylene Blue Test and ASTM C1777: Standard Test Method for Rapid Determination of the Methylene Blue Value for Fine Aggregate or Mineral Filler Using a Colorimeter. A high methylene blue value flags aggregate with excessive clay or harmful fine material that can adversely affect concrete workability, strength and durability.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the methylene blue value indicate?
It indicates the amount of clay and harmful fine material present in the fine aggregate fraction, based on how much dye the sample adsorbs.

How is the test endpoint detected?
The endpoint is detected when a persistent pale blue halo appears around a drop of the suspension on filter paper as dye is added incrementally.

Which standards govern this test?
EN 933-9 in Europe and ASTM C1777 internationally govern the methylene blue value test for fine aggregate and mineral filler.
