What is the difference between aggregate impact value and Los Angeles abrasion value?
The impact value measures toughness: a sample is struck 15 times by a falling hammer and the fines produced are weighed. The Los Angeles abrasion value measures resistance to wear: the sample is tumbled with steel balls in a rotating drum. Road specifications usually set limits on both because pavement aggregates suffer both sudden loading and long-term attrition.
