The Laboratory Vane Apparatus determines the shear strength of a soil sample confined within its sample tube, supplied with a hand-operated clutch for controlled torque application.

How It Works

A four-bladed vane is pressed into the soil sample still confined in its sampling tube; the hand-operated clutch applies a steadily increasing torque to rotate the vane at a controlled rate until the soil shears, and the maximum torque recorded is used to calculate the soil's undrained shear strength.
