Pocket Penetrometer (Soil) Manufacturer,Supplier and Exporter in India
Product Code : TVT-STE-10565
The Pocket Penetrometer (Soil) is a compact, spring-loaded, direct-reading instrument used to obtain a quick, approximate estimate of the shear strength of cohesive and semi-cohesive soils in the field or laboratory.
How It Works
The calibrated piston is pressed into the soil surface by hand to a marked depth; the reaction force is displayed on a direct-reading dial scale in kgf/cm², and a sliding indicator sleeve retains the peak reading after the piston is released so it can be read at leisure. Because the reading correlates with unconfined compressive strength, the pocket penetrometer gives engineers a rapid go/no-go check without needing a full laboratory test.
Technical Specifications

| Range | 0–5 kgf/cm² |
| Dimension | 20 mm dia. x 173 mm length |
| Approx. Weight | 0.5 kg |
Applications
The pocket penetrometer provides a rapid field estimate that correlates with the unconfined compressive strength of cohesive soil as determined in the laboratory per ASTM D2166: Standard Test Method for Unconfined Compressive Strength of Cohesive Soil and IS 2720 (Part 10): Determination of Unconfined Compressive Strength. It is widely used by site engineers and geologists for quick strength screening of exposed soil faces, trial pits and borehole samples.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the pocket penetrometer reading represent?
The dial reading in kgf/cm² correlates with the equivalent unconfined compressive strength of the cohesive soil being tested.
Why does the indicator sleeve matter?
It retains the peak reading after the piston is released, so the operator does not need to read the dial at the exact moment of maximum penetration.
Is the pocket penetrometer a replacement for laboratory UCS testing?
No, it gives a rapid field estimate for screening and quality checks; where a precise value is required, laboratory unconfined compressive strength testing per ASTM D2166 / IS 2720 Part 10 should be carried out.
