Linear Shrinkage Mould Manufacturer,Supplier and Exporter in India
Product Code : TVT-STE-10577
The Linear Shrinkage Mould is used to determine the linear shrinkage of soil, a simple index test that indicates the plastic properties of soils, particularly those with low clay content where the standard Atterberg limits are harder to determine reliably.
How It Works
A soil-water paste at its liquid limit consistency is placed into the brass mould and allowed to dry slowly, first in air and then in an oven, without cracking. The reduction in length of the dried soil bar compared with the original mould length is measured and expressed as a percentage linear shrinkage, which correlates with the soil's plasticity characteristics.

Applications
The linear shrinkage test is used as a simple alternative or supplement to the plastic limit determination, particularly for soils with low clay content, per BS 1377 (Part 2): Classification Tests. Results support soil classification and give an early indication of a soil's susceptibility to shrink-swell behaviour in earthworks and foundation design.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is linear shrinkage useful for low-clay soils?
It provides a simple, reliable plasticity indicator for soils where the standard liquid/plastic limit tests can be difficult to perform consistently due to low clay content.
Why are two mould sizes offered?
The 140 mm and 254 mm specimen lengths accommodate different laboratory procedures and specimen quantity requirements.
Why is the mould made of brass?
Brass resists corrosion and provides a smooth, dimensionally stable surface that helps the drying soil bar release cleanly for accurate length measurement.
