The Compaction Fraction Tester is used to determine the optimum water content of a soil — the moisture content at which the soil achieves its maximum dry density under a given compactive effort.
How It Works
A soil sample is adjusted to five different moisture contents, and each is individually compacted into the open-ended steel mould in layers using a steel rammer with a flat striking face dropped from a fixed height. Plotting dry density against moisture content for the five specimens produces a compaction curve, from which the peak (maximum dry density) and the corresponding optimum moisture content are identified.

Applications
This is a standard Proctor-type compaction test set-up, used to establish the moisture-density relationship of soil for earthworks and foundation control per IS 2720 (Part 7): Determination of Water Content-Dry Density Relation Using Light Compaction and ASTM D698 (Standard Proctor), or the heavier compactive effort of IS 2720 (Part 8) / ASTM D1557 (Modified Proctor) depending on rammer mass and drop height used. Results define the target density and moisture content specified for field compaction quality control.
