The Shrinkage Limit Set brings together the items needed to perform the shrinkage limit test, determining the moisture content below which further drying causes no further reduction in soil volume.

How It Works

A soil-water paste, prepared at or above its liquid limit, is placed into a calibrated shrinkage dish and allowed to dry gradually until no further volume change occurs. By measuring the mass and volume of the soil pat before and after drying, along with the mass of mercury or an equivalent volumetric method displaced by the dried pat, the shrinkage limit and related shrinkage factors (shrinkage ratio, volumetric shrinkage) are calculated.

Applications

Shrinkage limit testing is used to characterise a soil's volume-change behaviour on drying, governed by IS 2720 (Part 6): Determination of Shrinkage Factors and ASTM D4943: Standard Test Method for Shrinkage Factors of Soils by the Wax Method. Results support the assessment of expansive/shrink-swell soils for foundation design and are used alongside the Atterberg limits to fully characterise a soil's plasticity behaviour.
