The Splitting Tensile Device is used to perform the splitting tensile (Brazilian) test on concrete cylinder specimens across a range of common diameters, giving an indirect measure of concrete's tensile strength.
How It Works
A cylindrical concrete specimen is placed on its side between the platens of a compression testing machine, with the load applied along a line across its diameter rather than on its flat circular ends. Packing strips distribute the line load evenly along the specimen's length. As the load increases, the specimen splits along the loaded diametral plane in tension, and the tensile strength is calculated from the failure load, the cylinder's diameter, and its length.
