The Field Inspection Pocket Vane Tester is a compact, hand-held instrument designed to measure the in-situ undrained shear strength of clays quickly and reliably on site, ideal for agronomists and civil engineers alike.
How It Works
The instrument consists of a T-handle cylindrical body housing a torsional spring, with three interchangeable vanes of different sizes selected according to the expected strength of the soil being tested (all vanes share a height-to-diameter ratio of 2). The vane is driven 5–6 cm into the soil and then turned using the handle; the torque needed to shear the soil is transmitted through the spring and shown via a drag ring for easy read-out, with a dummy setting available for zero calibration before testing. An extension rod allows measurements to be taken deeper, including at the top of undisturbed samples recovered from boreholes, and testing to a maximum depth of 3 metres.
