The Fall Cone Apparatus provides a rapid, simple and accurate method for determining the undrained shear strength and sensitivity of both undisturbed and remoulded clays, and can also be used to determine the liquid limit of soil by the cone penetration method.

How It Works

A standard cone of known mass and angle is allowed to fall freely under its own weight into the surface of a soil specimen for a fixed period, and the depth of penetration is measured using a digital caliper mounted on the frame. Because the relationship between cone penetration depth and undrained shear strength has been established through extensive research, the measured penetration can be converted directly to a shear strength value; testing the same soil in its undisturbed and remoulded states allows the sensitivity of the clay to be calculated.

Applications

The fall cone test for undrained shear strength and sensitivity of clays is carried out per ISO/TS 17892-6: Geotechnical Investigation and Testing – Laboratory Testing of Soil – Part 6: Fall Cone Test, while the cone penetration method for liquid limit determination follows BS 1377 (Part 2) and is recognised as an alternative method under ASTM D4318 and IS 2720 (Part 5). The dual capability makes the fall cone apparatus a versatile addition to a soil mechanics laboratory already running Atterberg limits and shear strength testing.
