Semi Automatic Ring & Ball Softening Point Apparatus

Product Code : TVT-BATE-10352

The Semi Automatic Ring & Ball Softening Point Apparatus from Tvet Equipments determines the softening point of bituminous materials with a windowed digital display of temperature and timing, operated with a simple push-button function for straightforward, repeatable testing.

How It Works

Bitumen-filled rings sit on a support plate above steel balls in a bath of water or glycerol, heated at a controlled linear rate by a PID-controlled heating element while an adjustable-speed magnetic stirrer keeps the bath temperature uniform. As each ball's supporting bitumen disc softens and the ball drops through it, the instrument's high-quality temperature probe logs the bath temperature at that moment as the softening point, with real-time display of both temperature and elapsed time and automatic display of the average result.

Applications

The Semi Automatic Ring & Ball Softening Point Apparatus is used to determine the softening point of bitumen under ASTM D36 / IS 1205, the standard test methods for softening point of bitumen using the ring-and-ball apparatus, in asphalt binder QC laboratories, road construction testing facilities, and civil engineering institutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Why is the 25.4 mm dropping distance specified?
ASTM D36 and IS 1205 both specify a fixed 25.4 mm (1 inch) drop distance beneath the ring, standardising the point at which the ball's fall is recorded as the softening point.

Q2. What heating rate does the bath use?
A PID-controlled heater raises the bath temperature at a linear rate of 5 ± 0.5 °C per minute, as required by the standard test procedure.

Q3. Can it test in both water and glycerol baths?
Yes, the apparatus is applicable for both water (for lower softening points) and glycerol (for higher softening points) test liquids.
