The Water In Bituminous Apparatus from Tvet Equipments determines the water content of petroleum products and bituminous materials by distillation with a water-immiscible, volatile solvent, following the Dean and Stark distillation principle.
How It Works
A weighed sample is mixed with a water-immiscible solvent (such as xylene) and heated to reflux in a distillation flask connected to a graduated water-trap receiver. The solvent vapour carries any water present in the sample over into the condenser, where it condenses and collects, separated from the solvent, in the graduated trap. The volume of water collected is read directly and expressed as a percentage of the original sample mass.
