Heavy Duty Mot Straightedge

Product Code : TVT-BATE-10358

The Heavy Duty MOT Straightedge from Tvet Equipments is a 3-metre aluminium alloy straightedge used to measure surface irregularities in road pavement, checking that a laid or finished surface conforms to the smoothness required by highway specifications.

How It Works

The straightedge is laid directly on the pavement surface, supported at each end on a pair of wedges (ordered separately), and the gap between the underside of the straightedge and the pavement is measured at intervals along its length using a feeler gauge or dipstick. Larger gaps indicate greater surface irregularity, and the maximum recorded gap is compared against the tolerance set by the relevant specification.

Applications

The Heavy Duty MOT Straightedge is used for pavement surface regularity checks under BS EN 13036-7, the European standard test method for irregularity measurement of pavement course surface characteristics, and is widely specified in UK-style Specification for Highway Works (MOT) surface acceptance testing. It is used by highway construction contractors and site quality control teams.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Why does the straightedge need support wedges?
The wedges raise each end of the straightedge to a set, repeatable height above the pavement, so the gap measured underneath reflects true surface irregularity rather than the straightedge resting directly on high points.

Q2. Why is it made from aluminium alloy?
Aluminium alloy keeps the 3 m straightedge light enough (10 kg) for one person to handle on site while remaining stiff and straight over its full length.

Q3. What standard governs this test?
Surface regularity testing with a straightedge is carried out under BS EN 13036-7, commonly referenced in UK-style Specification for Highway Works (MOT) surface acceptance criteria.
