Le Chatelier Mould Set

Product Code : TVT-CMTE-10418

The Le Chatelier Mould Set from Tvet Equipments determines the soundness of cement and hydrated lime through the classic split-cylinder expansion test, giving laboratories a simple, low-cost method for detecting unsoundness caused by free lime or magnesia.

How It Works

A neat cement or hydrated lime paste is used to fill the small split-cylinder mould, which has two indicator needles projecting from either side of the split. After initial setting, the distance between the needle tips is measured, the mould (with specimen) is then subjected to a boiling water immersion period, and the needle-tip distance is measured again afterward. The increase in distance between the needles indicates the degree of expansion, and therefore the soundness, of the cement or lime.

Applications

The Le Chatelier Mould Set is used to determine the soundness (setting and expansion behaviour) of cement and hydrated lime to IS 4031 Part 3 / EN 196-3, an alternative method to the autoclave expansion test (ASTM C151) more commonly specified in IS and EN test regimes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What standard governs the Le Chatelier soundness test?
IS 4031 Part 3 and EN 196-3 both specify the Le Chatelier method for determining the soundness of cement and hydrated lime.

Q2. How is this different from the autoclave expansion test?
The Le Chatelier method uses a small split-ring mould and boiling water immersion to measure expansion, while the autoclave method (ASTM C151) subjects cast bar specimens to high-pressure steam — both test for unsoundness but follow different national/regional standard traditions.

Q3. What does soundness testing detect?
It detects excessive free lime or magnesia content in cement or lime, which can cause delayed expansion and cracking after the material has hardened.
