The Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) is used to measure the in-situ structural properties of existing road pavements constructed with unbound materials, giving a rapid, continuous profile of layer strength with depth.
How It Works
A cone-tipped rod is driven into the pavement or subgrade by repeated blows from a sliding drop hammer of standard mass and drop height, and the penetration per blow is recorded against depth. Where pavement layers have different strengths, the boundaries between them can be identified from changes in the penetration rate, and the thickness of each layer determined. Continuous measurements can be taken down to a depth of approximately 850 mm, or to a recommended maximum of 2 m when extension shafts are fitted.
