Consolidation Apparatus

Product Code : TVT-STE-10595

The Consolidation Apparatus (oedometer) is a compact, precision instrument used to determine the one-dimensional consolidation properties of soil, from which settlement and consolidation rate under sustained load can be predicted.

How It Works

A saturated soil specimen, confined laterally in a rigid ring, is loaded incrementally through a triple-beam lever ratio system that amplifies applied dead-weight loads onto the specimen via a rigid platen; vertical deformation is monitored over time at each load increment as excess pore pressure dissipates. The compact frame design, built around a cast aluminium body with a steel platen, achieves high accuracy and repeatability without the bulk of larger consolidation frames, saving valuable bench space.

Applications

The consolidation (oedometer) test is used to determine the compressibility, consolidation coefficient and settlement behaviour of fine-grained soils under sustained load, governed by ASTM D2435/D2435M: Standard Test Methods for One-Dimensional Consolidation Properties of Soils Using Incremental Loading and IS 2720 (Part 15): Determination of Consolidation Properties. Results are fundamental to predicting long-term settlement of foundations, embankments and fills placed on compressible clay and silt deposits.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the consolidation test predict?
It predicts the magnitude and rate of settlement of a fine-grained soil under sustained load, based on its compressibility and consolidation coefficient.

Why use a triple-beam lever ratio?
A triple-beam lever system amplifies smaller dead-weight loads into the higher pressures needed on the specimen, while keeping the overall frame compact.

Which standards govern this test?
ASTM D2435/D2435M internationally and IS 2720 (Part 15) in India govern the one-dimensional consolidation test by incremental loading.
