Particle Size Analysis of Soil Apparatus

Product Code : TVT-STE-10576

The Particle Size Analysis of Soil Apparatus range from Tvet Equipments provides the items needed to determine the particle size distribution of very fine-grained materials such as silt and clay, where sieving alone cannot resolve the finer fractions.

How It Works

A soil suspension is prepared by dispersing a fine-grained sample in a deflocculating agent, and the settling velocity of particles under gravity is tracked, typically using a hydrometer, over a set time sequence; because settling velocity relates to particle size via Stokes' Law, the proportion of clay- and silt-sized particles finer than a given size can be calculated. The individual items required for this test — dispersion apparatus, hydrometer, sedimentation cylinders and related glassware — can be purchased as single items or grouped into a complete set to suit laboratory needs.

Technical Specifications

Supplied as individual items or as a complete set; component-level dimensions and quantities depend on the configuration selected — please confirm the exact item list with Tvet Equipments at the time of enquiry.

Applications

Particle size (grain size) analysis of the fine soil fraction is carried out using the sedimentation/hydrometer method per ASTM D7928: Standard Test Method for Particle-Size Distribution (Gradation) of Fine-Grained Soils Using the Sedimentation (Hydrometer) Analysis and IS 2720 (Part 4): Grain Size Analysis. Combined with sieve analysis of the coarser fraction, it gives the full particle size distribution used for soil classification (IS 1498 / ASTM D2487) and geotechnical design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a hydrometer used for fine soil particles?
Sieving cannot resolve silt- and clay-sized particles; the hydrometer method uses settling velocity under gravity, related to particle size by Stokes\u2019 Law, to determine the fine fraction\u2019s size distribution.

Can items be bought individually?
Yes, the apparatus required for this test can be selected as single items or grouped into a complete set.

Which standards govern this test?
ASTM D7928 internationally and IS 2720 (Part 4) in India govern grain size analysis of fine-grained soils by sedimentation.
