The Compacting Factor Apparatus determines the compacting factor of fresh concrete mixes of low, medium and high workability, giving a quantitative measure of workability that is less sensitive to very dry or very stiff mixes than the slump test.
How It Works
Fresh concrete is placed gently (without tamping) into the upper hopper, which discharges into a second, lower hopper, which in turn discharges into a cylindrical mould. The concrete falls under gravity through both hoppers into the mould, and the compacting factor is calculated as the ratio of the weight of concrete that falls into the mould under this standard drop to the weight of the same mould when fully compacted (by vibration or rodding) with the same concrete. A compacting factor closer to 1.0 indicates a highly workable, easily compacted mix, while lower values indicate stiffer, less workable mixes.
