Initial Surface Absorption Apparatus

Product Code : TVT-CTE-10501

The Initial Surface Absorption Apparatus assesses the surface water absorption characteristics of hardened concrete by measuring the rate of flow of water per unit area into the concrete surface under a constant head.

How It Works

A cap is sealed onto the concrete surface under test and filled with water to a constant head of 200mm; the rate at which water flows into the concrete surface is measured over set time intervals (typically at 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour and 2 hours from the start of the test), giving the Initial Surface Absorption (ISA) value used to judge the surface permeability and likely durability of the concrete.

Applications

Used to assess the surface absorption/permeability of hardened concrete per BS 1881-208 (Initial Surface Absorption Test), commonly specified for durability assessment of concrete exposed to weathering, marine environments, or chloride/sulfate attack.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Initial Surface Absorption Test measure?
It measures the rate of water flow into a concrete surface under a constant 200mm head, used as an indicator of the concrete\u2019s surface permeability and likely durability.

How is this different from the Impermeability Apparatus?
The Impermeability Apparatus (EN 12390-8) measures water penetration depth under pressure through a full specimen, while the Initial Surface Absorption Apparatus measures surface-level water absorption under a low constant head per BS 1881-208 — both assess durability-related permeability but via different mechanisms.

What readings are typically taken during the test?
Absorption readings are typically taken at set time intervals from the start of the test (commonly 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour and 2 hours) to plot the ISA value over time.
