How It Works
A measured volume of the sample is held in a viscometer tube surrounded by a temperature-controlled bath set to the required test temperature. Once the sample reaches thermal equilibrium, an orifice at the base of the tube is opened and the time taken for a fixed volume of the sample to flow through it is measured with a stopwatch or timer, expressed in Saybolt Universal Seconds (SUS) or Saybolt Furol Seconds (SFS) depending on the orifice used.
