The Motorized Unconfined Compression Apparatus is a geared, motor-driven loading frame designed for unconfined compression testing of soil specimens, supplied complete with an upper platen, a calibrated proving ring and a penetration dial gauge.
How It Works
The platen is advanced through a motor-driven mechanical gear system at a selectable, precisely controlled speed, with a rapid approach feature that allows the platen to close in on the specimen quickly before switching to the test speed. Load is measured via the supplied proving ring, which is delivered with its own calibration certificate, while specimen deformation is tracked using a penetration dial gauge with 25 mm travel, reading to 0.01 mm per division, mounted on the included gauge bracket. Applications
The apparatus is used to determine the unconfined compressive strength of cohesive soil specimens per ASTM D2166: Standard Test Method for Unconfined Compressive Strength of Cohesive Soil and IS 2720 (Part 10): Determination of Unconfined Compressive Strength. The range of capacities allows soft, low-strength soils to be tested on the lower-capacity models while stiffer specimens can be tested on the 50 kN model without exceeding the proving ring's calibrated range.
