Kelly Ball Apparatus

Product Code : TVT-CTE-10470

The Kelly Ball Apparatus is a simple penetration device for measuring the workability of fresh concrete on site, built from solid machined steel with a rust-resistant finish, offering a quick alternative to the slump test that can be used directly on concrete still in the form or on a flat surface.

How It Works

The apparatus consists of a 152mm diameter hemispherical steel ball weighing approximately 13.6 kg (30 lb), mounted on a calibrated graduated stem inside a tripod-style frame with handles. The ball is lowered gently onto the surface of the freshly placed concrete under its own weight, and the depth to which it penetrates is read directly off the calibrated stem. Greater penetration depth indicates a more workable (wetter, less stiff) mix; the reading can be correlated approximately with slump values for the same mix.

Technical Specifications

ParameterSpecification
Note on specificationsThe admin record for this product previously carried specification data copied from an unrelated Flow Table Apparatus listing (identical dimensions/weights to a different product) and did not reflect a genuine Kelly Ball apparatus. That data has been removed rather than repeated. Confirm exact ball weight, stem length, and frame dimensions with Tvet Equipments before ordering.

Applications

Used as a rapid, alternative field test for the workability of fresh concrete per ASTM C360 (Ball Penetration in Freshly Mixed Hydraulic Cement Concrete), particularly useful for quick on-site checks where a full slump-cone test set-up is less convenient.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Kelly Ball test differ from the slump cone test?
The Kelly Ball test lowers a weighted hemispherical ball onto the concrete surface and reads penetration depth directly, giving a faster single-reading check, whereas the slump cone test measures the vertical settlement of an unsupported concrete cone after mould removal — both per their own respective standards (ASTM C360 and ASTM C143/IS 1199 respectively).

Can this test be used directly on concrete already placed in formwork?
Yes — one advantage of the Kelly Ball method is that it can be used directly on the surface of concrete already placed on a slab or in a form, without needing to remould a separate sample as the slump test does.

Why doesn\u2019t this listing show detailed dimensions like weight or stem length?
The dimensional data previously listed on this product page was found to be copied from an unrelated flow-table product and did not describe a genuine Kelly Ball apparatus; rather than repeat incorrect figures, we recommend confirming exact specifications directly with Tvet Equipments.
