Accelerated Polishing Apparatus

Product Code : TVT-BATE-10366

The Accelerated Polishing Apparatus from Tvet Equipments determines the Polished Stone Value (PSV) of road aggregates, simulating the polishing action that vehicle tyres exert on road surface aggregate over years of traffic, compressed into a few hours of accelerated testing.

How It Works

Up to 14 specially fabricated specimens, each a curved mosaic of the aggregate under test, are mounted around a rotating road wheel. A rubber-tyred wheel is pressed against the specimens under increasing load as the road wheel rotates, continuously polishing the aggregate surface while a controlled feed of abrasive and water simulates the grit and moisture found on a trafficked road. After the specified polishing period, the specimens are tested on a skid resistance pendulum tester to determine their Polished Stone Value.

Applications

The Accelerated Polishing Apparatus is used to determine the Polished Stone Value of aggregates under BS 812-114 / EN 1097-8, the standard test methods for determining the polished stone value of aggregates used in road surfacing, helping specifiers select aggregates with adequate long-term skid resistance for high-speed or heavily trafficked roads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What does the Polished Stone Value indicate?
PSV indicates how resistant an aggregate's surface texture is to becoming smooth (polished) under repeated tyre contact, which directly relates to how much skid resistance a road surfaced with that aggregate will retain over its service life.

Q2. How many specimens can be tested at once?
The apparatus accommodates up to 14 curved specimens mounted around the road wheel, allowing a full batch to be polished in a single run.

Q3. What happens to the specimens after polishing?
The polished specimens are then tested on a skid resistance pendulum tester, which measures the surface friction remaining after the accelerated polishing to determine the Polished Stone Value.
