The Constant Head Permeameter is used to determine the coefficient of permeability of granular soils such as sands and gravels, where water flows through the specimen readily enough to sustain a steady-state flow condition.

How It Works

The soil specimen is contained within a transparent permeability cell mounted on a detachable aluminium top and base plate, with pressure take-off points at different levels along the cell connected to a manometer board and to a constant-level supply tank. Water is passed through the specimen under a constant head difference, and once steady-state flow is established, the flow rate and the head loss between manometer points are used to calculate the coefficient of permeability directly from Darcy's Law. Applications

The constant head test is the standard laboratory method for permeability of granular, free-draining soils, governed by ASTM D2434: Standard Test Method for Permeability of Granular Soils (Constant Head) and IS 2720 (Part 17): Laboratory Determination of Permeability. Permeability values from this test feed into seepage, drainage and filter design for embankments, dams and drainage layers.

When is the constant head method used rather than falling head?
The constant head method is used for granular soils such as sands and gravels, which are permeable enough to sustain a steady flow rate; finer soils are generally tested using the falling head method.

What do the multiple take-off points allow?
