Plate Bearing Equipment is used to estimate the bearing capacity of soil under actual field loading conditions, giving engineers a direct, in-situ measure of load-settlement behaviour for foundation and pavement design.
How It Works
A rigid steel bearing plate is seated on the prepared soil surface (or at foundation/formation level in a test pit) and loaded incrementally through a reaction system, typically anchored trucks, kentledge or a reaction beam. Settlement of the plate is measured against each load increment using dial gauges until the required maximum test pressure or settlement criterion is reached, producing a load-settlement curve from which the modulus of subgrade reaction and safe bearing capacity are derived.
