Binder Recovery Apparatus

Product Code : TVT-BATE-10375

The Binder Recovery Apparatus from Tvet Equipments is a double-flask vacuum distillation unit for recovering asphalt binder from extraction solvent, sized for laboratories that need duplicate binder determinations, since most test methods require testing in duplicate.

How It Works

The bitumen-solvent extract is loaded into one of the two flasks, supplied complete with bungs and rubber tubing and mounted on a common base frame. An electric heater and water bath gently heat the flask while the vacuum pump, fitted with a regulator gauge and manifold, reduces pressure inside the system, allowing the solvent to distill off at a lower temperature to minimise binder hardening during recovery. Running two flasks side by side lets a laboratory complete duplicate recoveries in the same setup.

Applications

The Binder Recovery Apparatus is used for vacuum recovery of asphalt binder from extraction solvent under ASTM D1856, the standard test method for recovery of asphalt from solution by the Abson method, allowing recovered binder to be characterised by further penetration, softening point, or ductility testing. It is used in asphalt QC laboratories running duplicate binder recovery tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Why does the apparatus have two flasks?
Most binder recovery test methods require duplicate determinations for reliable results, so the double-unit design lets both recoveries run side by side in one setup.

Q2. What role does the vacuum pump play?
The vacuum pump lowers the pressure inside the recovery flask, allowing the solvent to distill off at a lower temperature, which helps minimise unwanted hardening of the recovered asphalt binder.

Q3. What is recovered binder used for?
The asphalt recovered by this apparatus can be tested further for penetration, softening point, or ductility, giving insight into the binder's properties as it existed in the original bituminous mixture.
