Unbonded Capping Retainers

Product Code : TVT-CTE-10437

The Unbonded Capping Retainers from Tvet Equipments provide a fast, safe alternative to sulphur hot capping for preparing concrete cylinder end surfaces ahead of compression testing, using steel retainer discs and replaceable neoprene pads.

How It Works

Two steel capping retainers are applied to the top and bottom surfaces of a cylinder specimen, with a neoprene pad placed between each retainer disc and the specimen's end face. When the specimen is loaded in compression, the neoprene pads conform to minor surface irregularities on the cylinder ends, distributing load evenly without the time, heat and safety hazards associated with sulphur mortar capping.

Applications

These retainers and pads are used for unbonded capping of concrete cylinder specimens to ASTM C1231, the standard method specifying steel retainer caps with 60 or 70 Shore durometer neoprene pads as an alternative to sulphur mortar capping ahead of compressive strength testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What standard governs unbonded capping?
ASTM C1231 specifies the unbonded capping method using steel retainers and neoprene pads as an alternative to sulphur mortar capping for concrete cylinders.

Q2. Why choose 60 Shore versus 70 Shore neoprene pads?
ASTM C1231 specifies pad hardness according to the expected concrete strength range being tested — softer 60 Shore pads for lower-strength concrete and harder 70 Shore pads for higher-strength concrete, so laboratories should follow the standard's guidance for their specific strength range.

Q3. What cylinder sizes are covered?
Retainers and pads are available for both 4" / 100 mm and 6" / 150 mm diameter cylinders.
