Brinell Hardness Tester

Product Code : TVT-STE-10619

The Brinell Hardness Tester determines the Brinell hardness (HBW) of metallic materials by pressing a hardened steel or tungsten-carbide ball indenter into the sample surface under a set test force.

How It Works

A ball indenter of known diameter is pressed into the test material under a specified load for a set dwell time, then the load is removed and the diameter of the resulting indentation is measured under magnification. The Brinell hardness value is calculated as the applied test force divided by the curved surface area of the indentation, giving a hardness reading well suited to coarser-grained or non-uniform materials such as castings and forgings.

Applications

Brinell hardness testing is governed by ASTM E10: Standard Test Method for Brinell Hardness of Metallic Materials and IS 1500: Method for Brinell Hardness Test for Metallic Materials, commonly used for structural steel, castings and forgings where a large, averaged indentation gives a more representative hardness reading than finer-scale methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Brinell hardness testing used for?
It is used to determine the hardness of metallic materials, particularly castings, forgings and coarser-grained metals, by measuring the size of an indentation left by a ball indenter under load.

What hardness range does this tester cover?
It covers a Brinell hardness range of 8 to 650 HBW.

How does Brinell testing differ from Rockwell testing?
Brinell testing measures the diameter of an indentation left by a ball indenter to calculate hardness, while Rockwell testing reads hardness directly from the depth of indenter penetration under load.
