The Rockwell Hardness Tester (Analogue Indicator) determines the Rockwell hardness of metallic materials by measuring the depth of penetration of an indenter under a major test load, read directly off an analogue dial.

How It Works

A diamond cone or hardened steel ball indenter is first pressed into the sample under a small preliminary (minor) load to seat it, then a larger major load is applied and subsequently removed while the minor load is held; the permanent increase in indentation depth caused by the major load is read directly off the analogue dial indicator in Rockwell hardness units, without any separate diameter measurement being required.
