Sand Equivalent Test Apparatus

Product Code : TVT-ARTE-10286

The Sand Equivalent Test Apparatus from Tvet Equipments determines the relative proportion of fine, plastic (clay-like) material to sand-size particles in granular soils and fine aggregate, helping labs assess whether a material is suitable for pavement and concrete use.

How It Works

A measured sample and working solution are agitated in a graduated cylinder, then left to stand so sand settles below the suspended clay/fines. The sand equivalent value is read directly from the graduated scale as the ratio of sand height to total suspension height.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What does the Sand Equivalent Test measure?
It measures the proportion of fine, clay-like material relative to sand-size particles in a soil or fine aggregate sample.

Q2. Which standards apply?
IS 2720 (Part 37), ASTM D2419, and AASHTO T176.

Q3. Why is this test important for road construction?
A low sand equivalent value indicates excess clay/fines, which can weaken pavement layers, so it is a standard acceptance check for subgrade and fine aggregate.
